Whatcha Up To, Coffee?! – 2024 #6

A weekly status update from everyone’s favourite caffeinated weirdo.

Welcome back to Whatcha Up To! Coffee here, and here’s to the end of another week! Let’s break down what’s been happening:

Whatcha Playin’, Coffee?

Finished up Kirby’s Dream Land 3 this week and it was a great title. Fun, beautiful visuals and there’s a challenge or two in there. I needed to fulfill special requirements to fully beat each level. Some were pretty tough (gathering the robot parts with the animal buddies >.<), but overall, it was a nice and light palette cleanser.

Continuing with the backlog, I started a playthrough of Final Fantasy Tactics. I’m playing it on the PS Vita. It ain’t my first rodeo with this game – I’ve tried several times to beat it, only to give up. This time around, I’m following a guide. I know it sounds lame, but I’m tired of having this title on my backlog. I’ve had the copy for longer than ten years now, it’s about time I completed it. On the subject of Final Fantasy, I’m simultaneously playing Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster on my Switch. Man, that game is a slog, even with the boosts enabled. That and II are the weakest entries in my opinion. I just have to knock this out so I can get to the golden SNES Trio of IV, V and VI. In Final Fantasy VII, I just got Yuffie and am heading to Junon.

Whatcha Writin’, Coffee?

Not much, this week, apart from the Final Fantasy VII Remake critique. I’ve made a lot of progress on it. My real job is currently busting my balls, so I haven’t had the time to sit down and empty my mind about Kid Icarus or Shadow Dancer. So, the next Backlog Busting post may be pushed to the following week.

I’ve taken a short break from Mobius VII this week to focus on critique writing, but I expect to be back at it starting next Monday. I’m going to attempt another blitz like I did back in October and November last year. I managed to knock out almost 40,000 words in that period and I surmise I should be able to do the same here. I’d say about two of those blitzes should be enough to finish the book.

Whatcha Readin’, Coffee?

Oh, man, The Tainted Cup! Easily one of my new favourite reads in the last couple of years. I finished it the other day. I love the investigator, Ana. She’s blunt and capricious, but the way she figures out things using her assistant, Din’s, incredible memory was pretty awesome. I enjoyed the back and forth between the two characters. It makes the comparison to Holmes and Watson more apparent. There was a lot of political intrigue, more than I would usually expect in a high-fantasy novel. The stakes weren’t super high, as things like murder and politics become trivial when you’re facing off against leviathans at your front door. But the mystery behind the gruesome murders, which then tied to the breach in the sea walls keeping said leviathans out, kept me compelled and on the edge of my seat. I hope there will be more stories set in this world.

How’s Trainin’, Coffee?

I’ve finally got to the point where I was back in October, fitness-wise! Next is to maintain consistency while adjusting my diet. I’ve been eating pretty heavy to increase my mass, but now it’s time to lean up. Just in time for beach season!

That’s it for this week. Anything new on your end? Let me know below. Otherwise, I’ll talk to you next week!
