Whatcha Up To, Coffee?! – 2025 #8

A weekly status update from everyone’s favourite caffeinated weirdo.

Welcome back to Whatcha Up To! Coffee here, and here’s to the end of another week!

First off, it’s FRIDAY THE 13th! Best day ever, in my opinion. Whether you’re a fan of the Friday the 13th movies, or it’s your favourite day of the year – horror movie connotations aside – I hope you all have an awesome day today!

It’s been another busy week for Not-E3. Summer Games Fest came and went and I’ve added a bunch of games onto my wish list. Microsoft’s showcase also teased some Silksong footage (!!!!) and a brand new Steam Deck competitor. And the Switch 2 became the fastest selling console of all time, selling 3.5 million units in four days; more than what the Steam Deck did in its lifetime, which is nuts when you think about it.

Also, I was today years old when I learned that I could play my entire library of PS4 games on my PS5. This essentially means my PS4 Slim with the problematic disc drive and the constant beeping is a glorified Blue-Ray player at this point. It also means I can finally clear out the remainder of my PS4 backlog from the comfort of my own bed! Huzzah!

Anyway, here’s what’s been happening this past week:

Whatcha Playin’, Coffee?

I rolled credits on Cult of the Lamb and am attempting the endgame stuff while I still have access to the game. Unfortunately, someone put a hold on it, so I’ll have to return it early next week. Seriously, there’s still SO MUCH to do in that game. And now I have access to mating and birthing new followers who are ultra-loyal from the get-go. Plus, the Forgotten Commandments bit makes things really interesting, since I can pick doctrines that I opted-out of earlier. For instance, I opted out of murdering my followers, but now I can make that choice! It makes cult life extra juicy now! I’m definitely going to pick this up for my personal library, but the question remains: what do I play next?

I’m about halfway through my Borderlands 2 run. I just hit the spot where I stopped off my previous attempt at beating the game. I have to go through the Hyperion Wildlife Preserve and I think I remember what happens there… But first, sidequests! There’s a lot of questing to do at this point of the game, so expect me to be here for the next week or two. I started my questing run in the Caustic Caverns. What really strikes me is that, despite the apparent insanity and crude humor that exists within the Borderlands series, there is still a lot of nuanced lore to it. Like how multiple corporations descended on Pandora to extract its valuable minerals at the cost of virtually anyone and everyone who lived on the planet. Or the connections between Sirens and Eridium. It’s probable that I read/heard all of this stuff ten or so years ago and forgot, but it’s still fascinating.

As I mentioned above, I can now play my PS4 library on my PS5. How the heck did I not realize that earlier? Anyway, I slapped Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition on the console for me to play. I picked that up on sale years ago, but never got around to playing it. With Cult of the Lamb wrapping up, I should be starting that one soon.

I’ve also been listening to a ton of Final Fantasy music lately (no surprise there, to be fair). And as I’ve been listening to Yoko Shimomura’s incredible soundtrack from Final Fantasy XV, I kinda want to revisit that game. This might be a bad idea, given my thoughts on XV ages ago, but perhaps the time away from it will help me appreciate it more? I got rid of my deluxe edition copy like six years ago, but the Royal Edition is currently on sale for less than $20 and it’s supposed to offer a lot of improvements from the base game… Only question is, do I get it or not?

Whatcha Writin’, Coffee?

Still working on the new Backlog Busting post, but I’m also trying to put together something for Sonic’s birthday. Hopefully I can get it done before then, but if not, no worries. It just means more varied content coming your way very soon!

And yes, I’m still on Chapter 31. I made some good progress, but more needs to be done.

Whatcha Readin’, Coffee?

Boo, I have to return Gideon the Ninth because someone has a hold on it! I didn’t get too much reading done, unfortunately. I think I’ll hold off on library books and re-read some stuff on my bookshelf. Maybe even read that Final Fantasy book that I’ve been putting off for a long time?

That’s it for what’s been happening recently. Anything new on your end? Let me know below, or on Bluesky.
