Whatcha Up To, Coffee?! – 2024 #5

A weekly status update from everyone’s favourite caffeinated weirdo.

Welcome back to Whatcha Up To! Coffee here, and here’s to the end of another week! Let’s break down what’s been happening:

Whatcha Playin’, Coffee?

This week was spent playing only a few different titles. Still working on Wonder Boy in Monster World, but haven’t had the opportunity to play it much on the Genesis Mini. Gotta work on that. Meanwhile, I switched over (pun somewhat intended) to the SNES Online service on my Switch and started playing Kirby’s Dream Land 3. It’s ADORABLE! The sprite work reminds me of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, but the colour palette is more muted in the former. It’s more visually pleasing to my eyes, in my opinion.

Now, I know I should be focusing on playing new titles on the backlog, but, I caved and started a fresh playthrough of Final Fantasy VII – the original, not the Remake. I’m playing it on my highly versatile Miyoo Mini emulator, which runs pretty nicely! The emulation does have its limitations (there’s a bit of delay when transitioning between field and battle) but it’s excellent otherwise!

Whatcha Writin’, Coffee?

Working on the next Backlog Busting post about Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. That one might be delayed a touch, but it should come out next week. I’m writing Busting Reports for Kid Icarus and Shadow Dancer next.

Chapter 24 of Mobius VII Book 2 is finally completed! I may have to tweak a few things in that chapter, but I’m otherwise pleased at how I wrote this epic battle. I can’t wait to share it with you all! Next up is a chapter focused on Knuckles and the Chaotix, taking place prior to and after the said epic fight. Following that are a few chapters centred in Station Square – my equivalent for Costa del Sol! These chaps will be more character-focused, which I really enjoy writing. I hope to share more good progress as the weeks progress!

Whatcha Readin’, Coffee?

I’ve started reading an anthology series called The Book of Swords, but I’m taking a pause on that one to read The Tainted Cup, by Robert Jackson Bennett. It’s described as a Holmes & Watson style detective story set in a fantasy setting, in which the victim was found with a tree erupting from its body. It sounds pretty interesting. I’ll report back next week on progress.

How’s Trainin’, Coffee?

Same as last week – more kettlebell and calisthenics. I’ve upped my current max on the KB though. I’m slowly getting back to my peak before I curtailed things last October.

Bonus! Whatcha Up To Last Wekekend?!

I saw the Sonic Symphony concert last Saturday with my brother and it was awesome! Had a bit of an issue with parking, but all that exercise and stretching really paid off when I was able to squeeze out of my car that was practically sandwiched between two SUV’s that were terribly parked. As for the concert itself, it started with medleys from Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Mania. A Chao Medley that I’ve not heard before bridged the gap between Classic and Adventure-Era. Then, we were treated to renditions of Sonic and Tails’ themes from Sonic Adventure, as well as Rooftop Run from Sonic Unleashed, Aquatic Park from Sonic Colours and a never-before-heard medley for Sonic Frontiers.

After the break, the whole place turned into a rock concert as a vocalist and her backing band joined the orchestra. We jammed out to songs like Escape from the City, Knight of the Wind, I Am.. All Of Me and the epic metal tracks from Sonic Frontiers. It all culminated into the epic finale of Live and Learn from Sonic Adventure 2. My bro didn’t expect that and I should’ve warned him beforehand, but whatever, we had fun! Or at least, I had fun! I lost my voice after singing so darn loudly haha.

That’s it for this week. Anything new on your end? Let me know below. Otherwise, I’ll talk to you next week!
